ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • The major accomplishments of the Cultural Competency Education Program at the University of Pennsylvania include the publication of a book on cultural competency and the development of online instructional videos. Achieving Cultural Competency: A Case-Based Approach to Training Health Professionals, was published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2009 and presents 25 cases on a broad range of topics and issues related to cultural competency. The book also awards up to 25 AMA category 1 credits (1 credit/case) and physicians can obtain 6 credits per year for 3 years, awarded online by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME). Two of the cases from the book, George Dennis, a 35 year-old African-American man with AIDS, and Nadia Rosenberg, a 53 year old Russian Immigrant with drug-resistant tuberculosis, were developed into instructional online videos. Information about the book, the online videos and the CME credits can be obtained at www.med.upenn.edu/culture.
