Drs. Luann Wilkerson, Paula Henderson and Art Gomez developed and tested a standardized patient based OSCE named Sam Washington to test cultural competence embedded in a 3rd year final CPX activity. Results were presented at an oral presentation at Pittsburgh for the SGIM National Meeting in 2008.
Drs. Sebastian Uijtdehaage, Paula Henderson, and Art Gomez developed an evaluative tool using script concordance to test cultural competence. This was presented at the International Ottawa Conference on Medical Education held in Australia 2008.
Dr. Arleen Brown and Medical Student Ajay Dharia developed an ethnopharmacology teaching module embedded in a third year ambulatory internal medicine clerkship which includes a case based didactic presentation, audience participation, a skit and pre and post test exercises. Models for environmental along with genetic factors in chronic disease management are also discussed. Contributions toward the course examination are anticipated as will a curriculum effectiveness assessments.
