ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Referenced current literature on cultural humility and work of the consortium in Bates Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking 10th edition, Ch 3 (published in December 2008).
  • Developed a student survey tool re baseline cultural competence – Texas Tech University HSC SOM Cultural Competence Survey for Students and Faculty. The tool has been shared with several members of the consortium and we are happy to disseminate further.
  • Developed a Basic Medical Spanish course to be completed by medical students between January of Year 1 and December of Year 2. The course consists of an online, self-directed learning format and is evaluated using an OSCE. The course is designed to enhance student interactions with patients whose primary language is Spanish and improve patient care by increasing patient/family/carer comfort levels through direct communication. The course can be accessed through the TTUHSC SoM website.
